Fishing outriggers are long poles or arms that extend horizontally from the sides of a boat, typically used for trolling in offshore fishing. They are designed to spread the fishing lines out and away from the boat, creating a wider spread of lures or bait and increasing the chances of catching fish.
To use fishing outriggers, the poles are typically mounted to the sides of the boat at a height above the water, using specialized outrigger mounts – either on the boat top or on the gunnel as Striker Base Gunnel Mounts. The fishing lines are then attached to release clips or pins that are mounted on the outrigger poles.
As the boat moves through the water, the outriggers hold the fishing lines out to the sides, preventing them from crossing or tangling with each other. This allows for a wider spread of lures or bait and increases the chances of attracting fish.
When a fish strikes one of the lines, the release clip or pin releases the line from the outrigger, allowing the angler to reel in the fish. Once the fish is landed, the line can be re-attached to the outrigger and the trolling can continue.
Fishing outriggers come in various sizes and types, including fixed and collapsible models. Some outriggers also have adjustable heights, allowing for changes in sea conditions or the size of the fishing lines being used.
