In this series, Boating Basics, we'll talk about a variety of introductory topics related to must-have accessories and other products commonly found on boats. If you have a topic you'd like covered or questions, comment below. In today's Boating Basics, we'll talk about using Outrigger Poles.
How do you use outriggers?
Outriggers are devices used in fishing to extend the width of a boat's fishing lines and increase the spread of baits or lures. They are typically used in offshore or trolling fishing scenarios to cover a larger area and increase the chances of attracting fish. Here's a general guide on how to use outriggers:
- Mounting: Start by mounting the outriggers on the sides of the boat. The outriggers are typically attached to mounting bases or holders that are securely fixed to the boat's top, gunnels or side rails. Ensure the outriggers are properly secured and stable.
- Extending the Outriggers: Extend the outriggers to the desired length. Most outriggers have telescoping sections that allow you to adjust their length based on your fishing needs. Follow the manufacturer's instructions to extend and lock the outriggers at the desired length.
- Rigging Lines: Attach the fishing lines to the outriggers. Tie the fishing lines to the clips or release mechanisms located on the outrigger poles. The lines should be attached at a point that is slightly higher than the desired spread of your baits or lures.
- Setting the Spread: Adjust the spread of the lines. The spread refers to the distance between the fishing lines on each outrigger. A wider spread can cover more area, while a narrower spread can be used for targeting specific areas or species. Adjust the clips or release mechanisms on the outriggers to achieve the desired spread.
- Deploying Baits or Lures: Attach your baits or lures to the fishing lines. Depending on the type of fishing you are doing, you may use bait rigs, trolling lures, or other types of fishing setups. Space the baits or lures along the fishing lines according to your preferred spread and spacing.
- Trolling: Begin trolling by moving the boat at a slow, steady speed. The outriggers will keep the fishing lines extended and prevent tangles. Pay attention to the tension on the lines and make adjustments if necessary to maintain the desired spread and prevent tangling or fouling.
- Strike and Retrieval: When a fish strikes one of the baits or lures, the fishing line will release from the outrigger clip or mechanism. Quickly bring the fish to the boat and reel in the line. Once the fish is landed, reset the line and continue trolling.
It's important to note that specific outrigger systems may have different features and instructions, so it's recommended to refer to the manufacturer's guidelines for your particular outrigger setup. Additionally, local fishing regulations and best practices should always be followed to ensure responsible and sustainable fishing practices.
