What is a Masthead Anchor Light?

masthead anchor light is a type of navigational light installed on the masthead (top) of a boat or vessel. Its primary purpose is to indicate to other vessels the presence and location of an anchored or moored boat during periods of reduced visibility, such as at night or in foggy conditions. Here are some key characteristics and functions of a masthead anchor light:

  1. Position: The masthead anchor light is typically mounted at the highest point on the boat's mast, which provides maximum visibility from a distance. This elevated position helps ensure that the light is visible from all directions and unobstructed by other structures or equipment on the boat.
  2. 360º Visibility: A masthead anchor light is designed to emit light in all directions, providing a full 360º visibility. This allows approaching vessels to see the anchored boat from any angle, helping them navigate safely and maintain a safe distance.
  3. White Light: The masthead anchor light emits a steady, white light. White is the standard color for anchor lights and signifies that the boat is at anchor or moored. The white light helps differentiate an anchored boat from other types of navigational lights, which have different colors and flashing patterns.
  4. Continuous Operation: Unlike some other navigational lights that may have specific flashing patterns, a masthead anchor light remains constantly illuminated as long as the boat is anchored or moored. The continuous light helps provide a steady reference point for other vessels, making it easier for them to identify and avoid collision with the anchored boat.
  5. Legal Requirement: The use of a masthead anchor light is often a legal requirement, mandated by maritime regulations and safety standards. It helps ensure the safety of both the anchored boat and other vessels by promoting clear visibility and awareness of the boat's presence during low-light conditions.

It's important for boat owners and operators to familiarize themselves with the specific regulations and requirements related to anchor lights in their jurisdiction or the waters they navigate. Compliance with proper lighting is crucial for maintaining safety on the water and preventing accidents or collisions.

At TACO, we offer two highly popular Masthead Anchor Lights that are ideal for boats 39' in length or shorter (12 meters or shorter). The Grand Slam 900 Masthead Anchor Light installs through the boat top and enables the raising and lowering of the navigational requirements from the safety of the deck. It has a lifting crank handle that locks flush into the base when not in use. The Grand Slam 950 Electric Masthead Anchor Light is full electric and enables easy adjustment with the simple push of a button from the helm.

Both the GS-900 and GS-950 are designed with boat safety in mind so boaters no longer need to climb on gunnels or seat backs to adjust the Masthead Anchor Light – both dangerous acts at sea.
