In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, which left much of Asheville, North Carolina without power and water, two TACO team members, Gene Bray and Billy Manus, stepped up to deliver crucial supplies and gasoline, aiding the recovery efforts.
Mike Kushner, Director of Sales & Marketing, and Bill Kushner, Business Unit Director at TACO Metals, were among those affected, staying in their neighboring Asheville homes when the storm hit. With the only road to their area blocked, they and most of their neighbors were stranded without power or water.
As cleanup crews worked tirelessly to clear debris and downed trees, their fuel and supplies were running dangerously low – threatening to halt the recovery work. That’s when a phone call to Pedro Rosa, Operations Manager at TACO’s Main Manufacturing & Central Distribution facility in Sparta, Tennessee in the evening of September 28 set a plan into motion.
Rosa, Bray (Shipping Manager), and Manus (Driver) quickly sprang into action. They filled a 100-gallon tank with gasoline, gathered chainsaws, water, food, and other critical supplies, and loaded everything into Bray’s truck.
At 4 a.m. on Sunday, September 29, Bray and Manus began their journey to Asheville. What should have been a three-hour drive became a grueling nine-hour trek as they navigated around flooding, road closures, downed trees, and safety blockades. Along the way, emergency workers allowed them passage, recognizing the urgency of their mission.
Upon arriving at the Kushners’ neighborhood, Bray and Manus distributed gasoline, food, and supplies to the hardworking crews who were clearing roads to restore access and provide aid. Not stopping there, they made a second trip, delivering additional gasoline and supplies to ensure the efforts could continue.
“At TACO, we believe in stepping up for our communities, especially in times of need,” said Rosa. “Gene, Bill, and I didn't think twice when we saw an opportunity to help our friends and neighbors in Asheville after Hurricane Helene. It's a testament to the dedication and spirit of the entire TACO team – always ready to go the extra mile, even when the road is long and challenging. I'm proud of what we accomplished together and grateful to be part of such a resilient and caring family.”
Bray, Manus, and Rosa demonstrated the spirit of resilience and community during a time of crisis. Their actions exemplified TACO’s Core Value "Care about People,” as they went above and beyond to assist those in need. Their commitment not only provided immediate relief but also inspired hope in the face of adversity.
We are deeply thankful and proud of our TACO Hometown Heroes – Pedro, Gene, and Billy – and for their extraordinary efforts in helping the residents of Asheville. From all of us at TACO, we salute you!
