Grab Rail

Note: Please print design template at 100% for accurate sizing. Slight scaling may still occur. Therefore it is recommended that all template dimensions are measured for accuracy before using. This should not to be used as a drilling template unless dimensions are checked.

Materials List:

  • Marine Lumber 1/2" X 12" X 27" Taco part # P10-5012WHA27-1
  • #8 stainless steel oval head sheet metal screws approx. 2" long

Tools:

  • Table saw
  • Carbide tipped blade with 50-70 teeth
  • Electric or battery powered drill
  • 3/8” and 3/16” drill bits
  • Router
  • 1/4" round over bit
  • Jigsaw
  • Wood cutting Jigsaw blade

Step-By-Step

  1. Draw outline of Grab Rail on Marine Lumber with the cut outs facing the edge of the Marine Lumber 
  2. Using a Jigsaw, cut out the two finger cut outs 
  3. Using the table saw, cut along the top line. The total width should be 2-1/4"
  4. Cut the 45 degree angles on each end
  5. Repeat steps 1 through 4 for each Grab Rail (You should be able to get 5 Grab Rails out of this piece of Marine Lumber)
  6. Make a mark on the top edge for the three 3/8" X 1-1/2" deep counter bores
  7. Drill the three counter bores 1-1/2" deep with a 3/8" drill bit
  8. Turn the Grab Rail upside-down and measure 3/4" in from one end and drill a 3/16" hole up into the counter bore
  9. Do the same for the other end
  10. Measure in 10" from the hole on either end to drill up into the middle center bore
  11. Repeat steps 7 and 8 on the remaining Grab Rails
  12. Rout all the edges with a 1/4" round over bit except the edges that mount to the deck
  13.  To install the Grab Rail drill 3 pilot holes 10" apart and install the Grab Rail with #8 stainless steel oval head screws
